PM Mette Frederiksen visits Tallinn for JEF leaders' summit

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen attended the two-day summit between the member states of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) in Tallinn on 16–17 December 2024.
The heads of state- or government of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were hosted by Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal for the summit that coincided with the 10th anniversary of the JEF.

The meeting provided an opportunity to assess the achievements of the coalition since its inception as well as to set goals for future cooperation. Among the key topics of discussion at the summit were the security in the Baltic Sea- and Northern Atlantic regions, support to Ukraine as well as investments in defence spending.

Concluding the summit, the JEF leaders among other things signed a joint statement endorsing the core principles of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Victory Plan that also reaffirms JEF nations’ commitment to collaborating with Ukraine on its implementation.

In addition, the JEF countries along with Germany and Poland agreed to jointly request proof of insurance from vessels suspected to be part of Russia’s shadow fleet going forward, marking an important step in the on-going effort to deter the fleet at the expense also of the Russian economy.

The JEF is a United Kingdom-led multinational format for military cooperation focusing on the Baltic Sea region, the North Atlantic as well as the area north of the Arctic Circle. The JEF complements NATO and is designed to be a first responder before a triggering of NATO’s Article 5. The framework is made up of like-minded countries that are ready to contribute quickly and flexibly to operations ranging from humanitarian crises to conventional warfare.
