June is the Danish month in Tallinn Botanic Garden
The Tallinn Botanic Garden transforms into an Embassy of the Plant Kingdom each month since May 2021. June 2022 is dedicated to Denmark when in cooperation with the Danish Embassy, exciting events for the whole family are organized.
On Saturdays, June 4, 11 and 18 at 12:00, botanist Urmas Laansoo will take those interested on a tour of plants of Danish origin. On a tour of the botanical garden, you will find out how many plants grow in Denmark, which are Denmark's national tree and national flower, and which plants from Denmark can be grown in Estonia. The tour can be attended with a standard botanical garden ticket. Registration at https://bit.ly/taanitaimed
During the whole month, the Danish Embassy presents an exhibition about cycling in Denmark in the Palm House. Most Danes associate the bicycle with positive values such as freedom and health. The exhibition features photographs of Danish cyclists and how cycling is suitable for all ages and in all weathers as long as the infrastructure supports it.
This year, from 1 to 3 July, Denmark is the starting point of the world's most prestigious cycling race - the Tour de France. The Tour de France Grand Départ starts in Copenhagen and the next two stages move through the southern half of Denmark's historic cities and beautiful landscapes. Denmark is covered by a 12,000 km long network of national, regional and local bike paths.
On 15 June everyone is welcome to take part in the flag hunt in the botanical garden. Dannebrog Day on 15 June is also called Danish Flag Day or Valdemar’s Day, as according to a legend, the Danish flag fell from the sky in Tallinn on 15 June, 1219. For the flag hunt Danish flags are hidden in the botanical garden, and their location can be discovered by looking at the photo. A small prize for every finder! The game starts on 15 June, and you can hunt for flags until the end of June. Ask for the game guide at the box office.
On 21 June is Greenland's national holiday, which is celebrated in the botanical garden with a cozy afternoon with Maris and Tiit Pruul's photos and travel stories from Greenland and an introduction to Greenlandic plants, followed by a Greenlandic style get-together kaffemik. The conversation evening starts at 5 p.m. and participation is free upon pre-registration at https://bit.ly/Gröönimaa
On 22June, at 4:00 p.m., you can take part in a walk and workshop in the botanical garden led by Danish gastronomy guides Nina and Thomas. Using naturally growing plants reduces the pressure on agriculture and adds new flavours to our food. The walk and the workshop are dedicated to the United Nation’s Day of Sustainable Gastronomy, which is on 18 June. The event is in English and lasts about two hours. Admission is free for registered participants: https://bit.ly/fromwildernesstothetable
