The King and Queen of Denmark on a State Visit to Estonia

Their Majesties The King and Queen of Denmark had a State Visit to Estonia on 27-28 January 2026. The Royal Couple was accompanied by Danish Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen and Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
King Frederik X and Queen Mary were officially welcomed at Tallinn Town Hall by President Alar Karis and First Lady Sirje Karis. The programme continued with a wreath laying ceremony at the Monument to the War of Independence at Freedom Square.

The King and The Queen visited President Karis at the Office of the President in Kadriorg and lit candles at the Memorial for the Victims of Communism in Maarjamäe. In the afternoon, Their Majesties met with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal at the Statehood House and toured the Estonian Parliament Riigikogu together with the President of the Parliament Lauri Hussar.

Before the State Banquet in the evening, Their Majesties, together with the presidential couple visited Rakett69 Teadusstuudiod / Rocket69 Science Studios. Here they met with HK Unicorn Squad to learn about how they promote girls’ participation in STEM – and joined a paper rocket challenge.
The evening ended in beautiful surroundings and high spirits with a concert and state banquet in the Niguliste Museum hosted by the Presidential Couple.

During the day the Danish Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen and Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen met with their Estonian colleagues, Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur and Minister for Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna.
The Ministers focused on continued support for Ukraine and on strengthening security in the Baltic Sea region – both central priorities for Denmark and Estonia.
Minister Rasmussen and Minister Tsahkna also took part in a moderated conversation led by Celia Kuningas-Saagpakk, Estonia’s Ambassador for Nordic-Baltic Cooperation. During the discussion, the Ministers reflected on the close cooperation between the Nordic Baltic countries, as Denmark handed over the NB8 presidency to Estonia for 2026.

The second day of the State Visit began Their Majesties The King and Queen of Denmark with a focus on cyber security and cooperation.
At CR14, The King and Queen gained insight into Estonia’s role as a frontrunner on cybersecurity. They were introduced to how CR14 facilitate training to strengthen Estonia – as well as NATO’s defence and resilience to potential cyberattacks. Their Majesties also learned about the role of NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE), a leading centre for cybersecurity and defence capabilities, which is based in Tallinn. 

Later in the day, The King and Queen hosted President Alar Karis and First Lady Sirje Karis at a reception in Tallinn Town Hall. The Danish-Estonian ties and strong singing tradition was marked with a performance from the DUVE – Young Vocal Ensemble in collaboration with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
The visit concluded in the historic Danish King’s Garden, where Their Majesties and the Presidential Couple exchanged farewells. From here The King and Queen continued on to Lithuania before returning to Denmark.
