Opening of Baltic Centre for Media Excellence

26.11.2015  09:15
On 11 November 2015 the official launch of the new Baltic Centre of Media Excellence (BCME) took place in Tallinn. The centre is to start its operations in an office located in Riga.

The Danish NB8 chairmanship has supported the establishment of the centre, and the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania has been a key player in the creation of the centre. Nordic Council of Ministers is supporting the start up of the centre.

BCME's primary aim is to help develop an independent media culture and coordinate the training and education of journalists with the Baltic States as its main area of operation. The Baltic area is home to a large Russian-speaking population that primarily consumes media services produced in Russia. In all three Baltic States both the public and private sectors are engaged in producing local Russian-speaking news, in particular Estonia which launched the Russian language TV-channel ETV+ on 28 September.

The BCME thus reflects a region-wide focus on the issue of strategic communication which both from a citizen and a security perspective is of great importance to all three Baltic States.  At the opening, Danish support to the first further-education of journalists was announced.
